MT. VERNON (WMIX) – Area veterans and their families are invited to Veterans Park in Mt. Vernon on Sunday, July 21 at noon, for food, fellowship and fun at a free event in their honor.
The 4th Annual Veterans Appreciation Picnic provides a space for those that served along with their families to gather, share stories and support, as well as make contact with support organizations.
In addition to the picnic, the Robert Morgan Jr. Bags Tournament is back this year. Sign-up starts at noon with a $30 entry fee and competition begins at 2 p.m.
Brian Gibson served with Morgan and organized the tournament as a way to raise money for the family left behind when Morgan died from cancer.
Veteran, Mt. Vernon City Councilman, and one of the event’s organizers, Donte Moore, says many organizations will be on hand for veterans to join or potentially have some questions answered.
There will be a special recognition ceremony for those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the War on Terror, and conflicts in Southwest Asia. Roll Call will be held for all 2023 deceased veterans.
