Just after 5 a.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to the accident and discovered that a 44-year-old male, who was operating an electric scooter, was struck by a passing vehicle. The man sustained life threatening injuries and was airlifted to a regional trauma center.

Sheriff’s investigators were able to identify the vehicle using photos they obtained that were captured before and after the accident showing the newly acquired vehicle damage minutes after the incident. They also identified the vehicle’s driver, but were not able to find the vehicle or the driver and requested help from the public.

Around 8:30 Thursday night, deputies responded to a report that the vehicle was at Casey’s on East DeYoung Street in Marion. They pulled the vehicle over after it left Casey’s. The vehicle was impounded and Lopez was detained.

Investigators processed the vehicle for physical evidence and confirmed it was the vehicle that struck the man on the electric scooter.

Lopez provided an interview during which he stated that he knew he was involved in an accident.
