CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale is seeking a new City Manager. This is being conducted through a nationwide search with CPS HR Consulting.  

The City Manager’s office is responsible for carrying out City policy and managing the operations of the City, supervising department heads, appointing, suspending or removing employees; enforcing laws and ordinances within the City, implementing Council goals, policies and programs; preparing the City’s budget, serving the City Council, acting as a liaison with the Council and other government and public agencies, and providing professional management and leadership to City departments.  

The ideal candidate should be a collaborative and relationship-focused leader, skilled at building connections and fostering trust. They will actively engage with employees, avoiding micromanagement while holding department heads accountable for performance. The candidate should be experienced in navigating political environments, working with diverse communities, and collaborating with active citizen groups. They must be decisive, innovative, and open to taking measured risks, with strong experience in economic development, public safety, labor unions, and financial management. The ideal candidate will also have experience in town/gown relations and be committed to a long-term role in the City.

This position will be open until filled, with first resume review date beginning Oct. 11. Applicants need to submit a resume, cover letter, and 6 work-related references. A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in public administration or similar field is required, and having a Master’s degree is preferred. Applicant must have a minimum of 5 years of experience of executive level management in a local government of comparable size and complexity.
