MARION – A Williamson County grand jury recently returned an indictment against a Herrin man in the murder of 58-year-old Virginia L. Melton of Herrin last month.

Williamson County State’s Attorney Ted Hampson says 38-year-old Tyler Mezo was formally charged with First-degree Murder in the shooting death of Melton at her Weaver Road home on Saturday, July 13.

Herrin Police requested ISP’s help in conducting a death investigation at the Weaver Road home. Melton was found dead there with multiple gunshot wounds. Mezo was identified as the shooter and was taken into custody. He was taken to the Williamson County Jail to await his first court appearance, which happened on July 17. He didn’t enter a plea in court that day, but an order was filed to keep him in custody.

Mezo was charged with First-degree Murder in Melton’s death after ISP presented the case to the Williamson County State’s Attorney’s office.

According to online court records, Mezo is set to appear in Williamson County Court for his arraignment Friday at 10:30 a.m.
