CARBONDALE – Carbondale Police have released more details into an alleged shooting that happened Saturday afternoon in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane.

Police responded to the scene at 1:10 p.m. regarding reports of a disturbance and shots fired. They found two people with injuries that were determined to have been caused by a physical fight among acquaintances over a personal disagreement. Those individuals received medical treatment and were released. Officers learned suspects fired shots during the fight, however, officers did not initially locate any victims with gunshot wounds. 

The investigation led officers to two people in a vehicle at the same location who had been involved in the disturbance and were alleged to have fired a gun. Officers identified one of the suspects as 36-year-old Manuel Cass of Carbondale. A loaded firearm was located in the vehicle the men occupied, and controlled substances were also discovered in Cass’ possession and inside the vehicle. Officers took both men into custody without incident. 

In the course of the investigation, a female arrived at a local hospital with a reported gunshot wound that she reported receiving during the incident officers were investigating. She was treated for her injury and was released from the hospital.

Cass was charged with Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Cass is lodged in the Jackson County Jail.

Officers did not charge the second suspect at this time and released him from custody. More individuals may be identified as suspects as this investigation continues. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
