MURPHYSBORO –  Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez announced Friday that 31-year-old Juan Rivera Marrero, of Carbondale, pleaded guilty in three cases in Jackson County on charges of Robbery and two counts of Burglary.

Carbondale Police Officers were dispatched on Sept. 19, 2023 to the Super 8 Hotel, located at 1180 E. Main St. in Carbondale, in reference to a robbery of 83-year-old James Meyers of Kentucky. Marrero is seen on video surveillance footage shoving Meyers to the ground and stealing his wallet before running out of the hotel. Marrero was eventually apprehended by law enforcement outside the Chili’s restaurant in Carbondale.

Marrero’s burglary charge from Sept. 17, 2023, occurred near the 300 block of E. Main St. in Carbondale where he had broken into a vehicle in the parking lot of the Auto Repair Shop. Marrero stole a necklace, sunglasses, and other items out of the vehicle and was immediately apprehended by law enforcement and taken into custody.

Marrero’s burglary charge that occurred on May 11, 2023, occurred at 317 E. Main in Carbondale. Marrero is depicted on video surveillance footage breaking into a vehicle and taking items out of the vehicle. Marrero was already under arrest for a different investigation and was served with these charges. Marrero originally pled guilty in this case in June of 2023, but after the more recent incidents his probation was revoked, and he was resentenced.

Marrero was sentenced to 10 years in IDOC for Robbery, three years in IDOC for Burglary, and three years in IDOC for Burglary. All to run concurrent with two years of Mandatory Supervised Release.

The investigation was led by the Carbondale Police Department on all three cases. Assistant State’s Attorney Sophia Allen led the prosecution for the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office and Marrero was sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections on Nov. 16, 2023.
