MT. VERNON – Residents of the city of Mt. Vernon should know they can burn leaves Monday through Sunday during the second full week of October. A leaf burning fire is permitted between the hours of sunrise and sunset until Oct. 14.
Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kevin Sargent said in a press release that no burning can occur on any public street or sidewalk, draining ditch within the public rightaway or manhole cover or on the property of another without written permission.
All types of fires must always be physically attended by someone at least 18-years-old.
Sargent says burning of any kind may be prohibited during any permitted leaf burning period by his order due to high winds, dry conditions or other factors.
