Three Killed in Massac County Crash Thursday

MERMET – A multi-vehicle accident claimed the lives of three people in Massac County Thursday morning.

Illinois State Police say around 6:25 a.m. 23-year-old Rachel E. Killian of Marion was driving her car north on US 45 south of Route 169 when she ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and crossed into the southbound lane of US 45. She then struck another car driven by 57-year-old Karla R. Reichert of Karnak head on. A SUV driven by 62-year-old Cathy J. Ulen of Ullin was behind Reichert and collided into the rear of Reichert’s car after the first collision.

Killian and a 1-year-old boy in her car were pronounced dead on scene by the Massac County Coroner.  A 9-month-old boy in the car was restrained in a child seat. Killian and the other passengers were not using a seat belt or a chid seat.

A 3-year-old boy and girl were also passengers in Killian’s car. They along with the 9-month-old boy were taken to Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah with serious injuries.

The 3-year old girl succumb to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Reichert was transported to an out of state hospital with severe injuries.

All lanes of U.S. 45 were closed for three-and-a-half hours for the crash investigation and cleanup. The investigation into the crash continues.
