MARION – An O’Fallon, Illinois man was killed Tuesday morning when the full-size GMC van he was driving on Interstate 57 was involved in a crash with two semi-trucks in Williamson County.
Fifty-seven-year-old Wayne S. Maxwell was pronounced dead at the scene by Williamson County Coroner Mike “Junior” Burke.
According to Illinois State Police, traffic on northbound I-57 was backed up due to a construction project that began at mile post 48. All three of the involved vehicles in this incident were going north around 10:14 a.m. at mile post 47.
A preliminary investigation shows a semi, driven by 27-year-old Jagpreet Singh of Lenexa, Kansas, was leading followed by Maxwell in the van. Both of these vehicles were slowed nearly to a stop for the backed up traffic.
At that time another semi, driven by 62-year-old Willie Lee Shelby of Madison, Mississippi, struck the rear of the GMC shoving it into the rear of Singh’s semi causing fatal injuries to Maxwell.
Jagpreet Singh and his passenger, 32-year-old Sarbjit Singh of Lenexa, Kansas, were not hurt. Shelby suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
All northbound traffic was diverted off of I-57 at Exit 45 until 2:45 p.m. when it resumed normal flow. All three vehicles were towed from the scene due to damage.
Shelby was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. Additional charges could be levied pending further investigation by Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Officers.Tweet
