Zeigler Residents Want Answers Regarding Missing Money

ZEIGLER – As the FBI continues its investigation into money allegedly missing from the Zeigler City Treasurer’s office, residents of the small Franklin County town went to the Zeigler City Council meeting Tuesday night looking for answers as to where the money went.

Those at the meeting told WSIL-TV that over $300,000 is missing from the city. The city’s attorney presented the crowd with a 22-page report with recommendations to avoid a similar problem in the future.

Zeigler Mayor Dennis Mitchell says they know where the leak was and are trying to repair it.

The city is going to submit insurance claims to get back some of the money soon. It will take about 10 days before the insurance might make good on the claim.

On Aug. 24, FBI agents executed a search warrant at City Treasurer Ryan Thorpe’s office and home taking ATVs, firearms and a motorcycle from the home. It’s unknown if agents took anything from his office. The city put Thorpe on administrative leave without pay later that day.
