Two Injured in Crash on SB I-57 in Williamson County

MARION – Two Missouri residents were injured after the SUV they were in was involved in a crash with a semi around 11:15 Thursday morning on southbound I-57 in Williamson County.

Illinois State Police say 47-year-old Robert R. Matheis and his passenger, 45-year-old Christina M. Matheis – both of House Springs – were driving south at mile post 51 and had slowed for traffic that was backed up from the road construction south of the crash scene.

A semi, driven by 26-year-old Raghubir Singh of Fresno, CA, failed to perceive the slowdown in time and struck the rear of the SUV. It came to rest in the median. The semi came to rest on the right shoulder and in the right lane.

Christina Matheis had to be extricated from the SUV. She was flown directly from the scene to a regional hospital due to the extent of her injuries. Robert Matheis suffered non-life threatening injuries and refused treatment at the scene. He chose to go to the hospital by private vehicle. Singh was not injured. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

The interstate was down to one lane for two hours for crash investigation and scene clean up.

Singh was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper lane usage and unsafe tire.
